Sexual Addiction

When healthy, sexual intimacy helps us feel close connection and pleasure in our relationships. However, when a person obsesses over sexual behaviors as a way to escape unpleasant or painful emotions, healthy behavior can develop into sexual addiction or compulsion.

Technology such as smart phones can also provide unlimited accessibility and virtual anonymity for someone prone to this type of problematic behavior.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with pornography or sexual addiction, we can help. You may consider seeking help if you answer positively to any one of the following questions:

  • Preoccupation – Do you find yourself fantasizing, daydreaming, or ruminating about sexual images or experiences?

  • Ashamed – Do you compartmentalize or hide some or all of your sexual behavior from others?

  • Treatment – Have you ever sought help for sexual behavior you did not like?

  • Hurt others – Has anyone been hurt emotionally, physically, or psychologically because of your sexual behavior?

  • Out of control – Do you feel controlled by your sexual behavior?

  • Sad – When you view pornography or engage in other sexual behaviors, do you feel depressed afterwards?

Substance Abuse & Addiction

Some of us may drink alcohol, take prescribed medications, or use other substances and can control our use. Some of us struggle to manage our substance use and may experience the following consequences and/or symptoms. In the past year have you experienced:

  • Drinking or taking a substance in larger amounts or for a longer time than intended.

  • Spent a lot of time using the substance or getting over the aftereffects.

  • Cravings such as strong urges, desires or need to drink or use.

  • Giving up social, occupational or recreational activities because of use.

  • Wanted to or tried to stop or reduce the substance use, but couldn’t.

  • Drinking or taking a substance despite experiencing consequences or causing harm to yourself or someone else.

  • Drinking or using the usual amount of a substance had less effect than before, or had to drink or use more to get the same desired effect.

  • Development of withdrawal symptoms that can be relieved by taking more of the substance.

If you are concerned about your drinking or that of a loved one, click the link below to visit the NIH (National Institute of Health) website. It has a wealth of information to help inform and guide you.
